For more than four decades, Tim Kalich devoted his career to community journalism, becoming one of Mississippi’s most respected newspaper editors, publishers and editorial voices.
Kalich joined The Greenwood Commonwealth in 1982 as a 24-year-old reporter who expected to stay in Greenwood for only a couple of years. Instead, he spent more than 42 years at the newspaper, serving in nearly every department—from advertising and circulation to news and management—before being named editor and publisher in 1995. Under his leadership, The Commonwealth earned a reputation as one of Mississippi’s finest newspapers and remained one of the few daily newspapers serving the Mississippi Delta.
A seven-time recipient of the Emmerich Award for Editorial Excellence, Kalich has earned dozens of honors for reporting, photography, column writing and editorial leadership. He served as president of the Mississippi Press Association and chairman of the Mississippi Press Foundation, helping guide the industry through a period of profound change. In 2024, the University of Mississippi School of Journalism and New Media presented him with its prestigious Silver Em Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to journalism and his dedication to local news.
Throughout his career, Kalich championed the values of fairness, accuracy and public service. Reflecting on his years at The Commonwealth, he wrote that his mission was to help produce “a newspaper that this community could respect and appreciate,” adding, “Even if it didn’t always agree with what we published, I hoped it knew that we would try our best to be fair and get both sides of a story.”
When he retired in 2025, Kalich described his decision to settle in Greenwood as “one of the best decisions I ever made.” Greenwood, he wrote, “has been good to us, and I hope we have come close to returning the favor.”
Today, he continues to support Mississippi journalism through collaborative projects with Press Forward Mississippi, extending a legacy of service that has strengthened both his profession and the communities it serves.
