For 25 years, Carolyn Wilson provided the steady leadership that helped transform the Mississippi Press Association into a strong, full-service trade organization serving newspapers and journalists across the state.

A native of Arkansas, Wilson joined the MPA staff in 1982 as an administrative and advertising assistant. At the time, she was one of only two employees working from the Association’s modest headquarters on North State Street in Jackson. She was promoted to executive director in 1985 and would lead the organization for the next 22 years.

Under Wilson’s leadership, MPA experienced significant growth in its staff, services and business operations. The organization grew to employ more than 10 full-time staff members, while its business subsidiary, Mississippi Press Services, handled millions of dollars annually in advertising placements for member newspapers through its One Order, One Bill, One Payment program.

Wilson guided the Association through the purchase and expansion of its headquarters facilities, first overseeing a move to a new 2,600-square-foot office building in 1987 and later helping secure a 5,200-square-foot headquarters in 2002.

But Wilson’s greatest legacy was her commitment to serving Mississippi newspapers and strengthening the relationships that have long defined the Association. She worked on behalf of members on cornerstone issues including open government and public access, while supporting journalism internships, professional development and continuing education for newspaper employees.

Known for her calm and capable leadership, Wilson forged lasting friendships with generations of newspaper publishers, editors and industry leaders. Her tenure helped establish MPA’s reputation as one of Mississippi’s leading media organizations and laid a foundation that continues to benefit the Association and its members.

Wilson retired as executive director in 2007 but continued to serve MPA as a consultant through 2009 and remained a trusted friend, mentor and adviser to the organization.

For her 25 years of dedicated service, her leadership during a pivotal era of growth and her lasting contributions to Mississippi newspapers and journalism, Carolyn Wilson was inducted into the Mississippi Press Association Hall of Fame.
