David Hampton

The Clarion-Ledger

Inducted July 7, 2012

David Hampton retired in 2012 after three decades with The Clarion-Ledger and the former Jackson Daily News. A Tennessee native, Hampton began his Mississippi career on the staff of the Daily Sentinel Star in Grenada.

“Would Mississippi be the same without David Hampton’s leadership? The answer is simply no,” said former Clarion-Ledger Executive Editor Ronnie Agnew. “(He used) the power of the newspaper’s editorial page to hold government officials accountable while also bringing forth ideas to move Mississippi forward.”

Hampton was serving as vice president for dailies on the MPA Board of Directors at the time of his retirement. He is a three-time winner of the J. Oliver Emmerich Award for Editorial Excellence. He serves on the board for the Mississippi Center for Freedom of Information.

“There is no one who loves Mississippi more,” Agnew said. “At the same time, there is no greater voice admonishing it to do better.”
