A third generation newspaperman and the CEO of the state's largest newspaper group will be roasted in February by the Mississippi Press Association to benefit its education foundation.

Wyatt Emmerich, publisher of the weekly Northside Sun in Jackson and president of Emmerich Newspapers, will be the "guest of honor" Feb. 6 at a fundraiser for the MPA Education Foundation. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation's scholarship and internship programs.

Panelists — or "roasters" — for the event include Mississippi Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, longtime MPA lobbyist Hayes Dent, attorney Wilson Carroll, and retired Enterprise-Journal publisher Charlie Dunagin. Editorial cartoonist, author and Mississippi Public Broadcasting host Marshall Ramsey, editor-at-large of Mississippi Today, will serve as Roastmaster.

A past president of MPA and past chairman of MPAEF, Emmerich is a native of McComb where his grandfather, J. Oliver Emmerich, was publisher of the Enterprise-Journal for nearly 50 years. His father, John O. Emmerich, was publisher of the Greenwood Commonwealth in the Delta community where Wyatt Emmerich attended high school.

He graduated from Harvard College in 1980 where he was editor of the university paper, The Harvard Crimson. He also earned a masters degree in business from UCLA. He has been a reporter for the Commonwealth, Cocoa Today in Florida, the Dallas Times Herald and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He worked on Wall Street with Merrill Lynch  as an investment banker to the newspaper industry before returning to Mississippi to take over the reins of the Northside Sun.

"We are very grateful to Wyatt for agreeing to serve as our honoree this year," said MPAEF Chairman Paul Keane, publisher of The Wayne County News. "He's being a very good sport for a cause important to us all."
