JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi Press Association Executive Director Layne Bruce has been named Clerk of Newspaper Association Managers (NAM), a consortium of North American trade groups representing the newspaper media industry.

Bruce, 45, is a Past President of NAM and has been actively involved in the organization since 2006 when he joined MPA as director of marketing.

He succeeds longtime NAM Clerk Morley L. Piper of Essex, Mass., who announced his retirement this spring after serving in the role for 22 years. Piper is the retired executive director of the New England Newspaper Association and a former national accounts manager for the Boston Globe.

Bruce will oversee operation of NAM through a management contract with Mississippi Press Services, Inc., a marketing and management company that is a subsidiary of MPA.

The changes were announced June 20 by NAM President Tom Newton, executive director of the California News Publishers Association.

"The board met recently to review several terrific candidates for the NAM Clerkship," Newton said in the announcement to member organizations. "Each candidate was more than qualified and capable to succeed, but not replace, Morley. (We thank him) for his decades of service to NAM.

"I am pleased to announce the board's unanimous appointment of NAM Immediate Past-President Layne Bruce," Newton added.

Bruce has worked in the newspaper industry for 30 years, starting in the production department of his hometown newspaper in West Point, Miss. He later served as a reporter, editor, and publisher for newspapers in Mississippi and Kentucky. He was named MPA Executive Director in 2007. As clerk, Bruce and MPS will be responsible for planning NAM conferences and events, facilitation of National Newspaper Week, and other management functions.

Founded in 1923, NAM is a consortium of state, provincial, regional and national trade groups in the U.S. and Canada. Founded in 1866 and marking its 152nd year, MPA is the trade group representing Mississippi newspaper media. MPS, founded in 1978, is a sales and marketing subsidiary serving Mississippi newspapers.
