The Prentiss Headlight
Inducted July 7, 2012
Patsy Speights retired in early 2012 as editor and general manager of The Prentiss Headlight in Jefferson Davis County. She was a past president of MPA and a past chairman of the MPA Education Foundation.
“She did it all: covered meetings, wrote news stories, sold advertising, laid out the pages and made sure the papers made it to the post office each week on time,” said Bill Jacobs, former publisher of The Prentiss Headlight. “She was epitome of the Norman Rockwell painting of a small town newspaper editor.”
Speights was also the state chair for the National Newspaper Association and, in 2007, was awarded NNA’s McKinley Memorial Award for her efforts on behalf of newspaper postal issues in Mississippi and nationwide.
She was recognized at a retirement program in her honor April 19, 2012, in her hometown during which MPA presented her with a resolution of appreciation from the Board of Directors.
“In those 25 years she put out a fine community weekly, and she has many awards to show for it. She told the Jefferson Davis County area story,” Jacobs said.
