The Mississippi Press Association Education Foundation established the Grant for Services Program in 1996 with its first grant given to Mississippi College for the purchase of computer equipment in exchange for Quark training for working journalists.

Deadline for submitting a grant proposal is May 15, 2003. The Journalism Education Committee will meet and review all proposals, and then make a recommendation to the MPA Education Foundation Board when it meets in June during the MPA Annual Convention, which is set for June 12-14, 2003 at the Grand Casino’s Bayview Hotel in Biloxi.

Following is the procedure to be followed regarding proposals.

  1. Colleges and universities should submit a ?grant for service? proposal.
    1. Proposal should be specific in terms of the service being offered and the use of the grant funds.
    2. Proposal can be generated by anyone in the school but must be approved by the top journalism/communications department official.
    3. The amount of the grant can range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the needs of the department.
    4. Proposal not to exceed 4 pages.
  2. Proposals should be submitted to the MPA Education Foundation Board.
    1. The Journalism Education Committee reviews proposals and makes a recommendation to the Foundation board.
    2. Decision criteria will include:
      1. Degree of need described.
      2. Extent of demand for service being offered.
      3. Cost evaluation of proposal.
      4. Value of proposal toward preparing future print journalists.
  3. Foundation board selects proposal to receive the grant.
