Gary Maitland, who formerly worked for the Daily Corinthian and Commercial Dispatch in Columbus, has been named managing editor of the Daily Commercial and South Lake Press in Florida… Brant Sappington has been named editor of The Banner-Independent in Booneville. He previously was a reporter for the Daily Corinthian. Both papers are owned by Kentucky-based Paxton Media.

Prince Newspapers makes hires

Mandy Meazell, a newspaper advertising executive from Texas with Neshoba County roots, has been named advertising director of The Neshoba Democrat. Additionally, Ed Darling, a veteran newspaper publisher, has been named vice president of Prince Newspapers, the parent company which owns the Democrat, Madison County Journal and Kemper County Messenger.

Journalist who reported notorious case dies

James Leeson Jr., a former reporter for The Hattiesburg American whose taping of a May 1951 radio broadcast describing the atmosphere at a black man’s execution in Mississippi in a highly publicized rape case was drawn upon for a newly released book and a radio documentary, died May 3 in Franklin, Tenn. He was 79.

Former EJ intern wins Canadian NNA prize

Three former Star interns were among 22 journalists honoured with Canada’s top journalism prizes Friday night.

Photographer Steve Russell, investigative reporter David Bruser and designer Jason A. Chiu picked up National Newspaper Awards for work at the Star and the Globe and Mail. Bruser formerly worked for The Enterprise-Journal in McComb.
