Nebraska Press honors UM’s Norton

John M. Fleming, longtime owner and publisher of the Quitman County Democrat in Marks, died Oct. 17 at him home in Marks. He was 69. His wife, Josephine, was his partner in running the newspaper… Wanda Walker, 88, former editor of the Commercial Dispatch, died Oct. 21 after suffering a heart attack. She was one of the first female editors of a daily newspaper in Mississippi… Jack Nelson, 80, a Pulitzer-winning former Washington, D.C. bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, died Oct. 21. He began his career as a reporter at the Daily Herald in Biloxi… Mike McQueen, AP chief of bureau in Louisiana and Mississippi, died Oct. 25 after suffering from cancer and congestive heart failure. He was 52.
Writes Biloxi Sun Herald editor Stan Tiner: When the White House recently announced the President would be visiting New Orleans and the “hurricane damaged” areas of the Gulf Coast in Mid-October, in accordance with a campaign pledge, our immediate thought was we better get ready.
But since the initial Associated Press notice was lacking additional facts the Sun Herald asked the White House Press Office directly – will he be coming to South Mississippi? The response was brief: “The President will be going to New Orleans.”
Joel McNeece, publisher of Calhoun County Journal in Bruce was honored during the National Newspaper Association’s 123rd Annual Convention and Trade Show, when he was presented with the Daniel M. Phillips Leadership Award.
Oxford’s latest publishing enterprise - The Oxford Enterprise - hit the streets Sunday after a three-week marathon of organization, hiring, ad sales, reporting and printing.
The Sunday-only newspaper is published by Scott Coopwood’s family of businesses, which also publishes Delta Magazine, Delta Business Journal and another Sunday-only newspaper, the Cleveland Current.
