The Enterprise-Journal and Southwest Broadcasting Inc. have filed a lawsuit against the city of McComb, its mayor and board of selectmen for allegedly violating the Mississippi Open Meetings Act to conduct city business behind closed doors.

According to the lawsuit, the newspaper and Southwest Broadcasting radio stations WAKH-FM, WAKK-AM and WAPF-AM take issue with recent closed-door meetings in which the city board authorized employee pay raises and created a new city department, among other action.

Lawrence “Sonny” Albarado has been named projects editor for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He was a longtime editor at The Commercial Appeal and a grad assistant at Mississippi State University… Brandon Walker of West Point has been named the new assistant sports editor of The Meridian Star. Walker previously served as the sports editor of the Daily Times Leader in West Point and worked as a reporter for the Starkville Daily News…Former Winona Times publisher Steven G. Watson has returned to the Madison County Journal as associate editor. Watson previously worked for both the Journal and sister newspaper Neshoba Democrat.

Newspaper editor killed in suspected hit

The editor of a weekly newspaper in Oakland, Calif. was gunned down as he walked to work Thursday in what police called a contract killing. Chauncey Bailey, 58, recently promoted to editor of the Oakland Post, was shot at 7:30 a.m. not far from his office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
