Attorney: County will comply with request

The attorney for the Claiborne County Board of Supervisors, responding to a public records request from The Vicksburg Post, said Friday that documents related to the county’s phone system purchase will be made available, but more time is needed.

Newspaper documentary to air Jan. 18

The documentary “Pressing On,” which profiles the five Gulf Coast newspapers’ efforts to cover Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, will air Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. on Mississippi Public Broadcasting. The program was produced by Ralph Braseth, director of the Student Media Center at Ole Miss, and journalism student Brandon Ross.

Same squabble, new year

The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi Link and the City of Jackson are going ’round again in this new year over municipal public notice advertising. The two papers bid the same, but the city council rejected them and will re-advertise. Council prez Ben Allen says the bids were suspect since they were the same. And Mayor Frank Melton just doesn’t “feel comfortable doing business with people who are ugly to the city.”

Nanette Laster, a one-time intern and reporter for the Daily Star in Grenada, has returned to the afternoon paper as managing editor. She spent 15 years as managing editor of the Daily Leader in Brookhaven…Debbie Best, longtime advertising manager at the McComb Enterprise-Journal, is leaving the paper at the end of the month and renewing her real estate license. She told us this week she’ll be working through a local agency there soon…Nikki Davis Maute looks forward to retirement and back on many good times and 20 years as a reporter at the Hattiesburg American.
