Keane departs Wayne County News

Paul Keane has stepped down as publisher of the Wayne County News, capping a near three-year run at the helm of the paper. During the period, the paper was twice honored as the state’s best large weekly paper in the MPA’s Better Newspaper Contest and won accolades for its annual, very hearty Football Edition and its pictoral volume after Hurricane Katrina. Keane announced in the Sept. 20 edition he was departing to join his wife in a family business venture.

In other developments, the paper announced it would return to publishing on Thursdays after several years appearing weekly on Wednesdays.

Colonel in retirement, but still working parttime

It has been three football seasons since Colonel Reb last set foot on the Ole Miss gridiron, banished because his old South image was seen as out of step with the changing South. But when the University of Georgia brings Uga VI to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium today, his Mississippi counterpart will be there in more than just memory.

Sun Herald to launch mag in January

The Sun Herald will launch a glossy magazine titled BeachBlvd in January, publisher Ricky Mathews said. The lifestyle magazine, which will be published six times a year, will feature articles on life and leisure, homes and gardens and food and dining in South Mississippi. It also will spotlight the characters and celebrities who make the Mississippi Gulf Coast such a unique place to live.”South Mississippi may not be what it used to be,” Mathews said. “But there is a new vibrancy, a broader vision, a fresh hope about things right around the corner. That’s where BeachBlvd finds its purpose and place.”

In other Sun Herald developments, editor Stan Tiner announced in Sunday’s edition the weekly TV Week supplement, dropped after Hurricane Katrina, will resume Nov. 5.

Journal quarterly dividend to CREATE is $125K

Journal Publishing Co., parent of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo, declared a $125,000 third-quarter dividend to its sole shareholder, the CREATE Foundation, at a recent corporate board meeting. Regular dividends paid through three quarters total $375,000.
