Friday, August 11th, 2006

The Mississippi Press in Pascagoula has launched a comprehensive editorial campaign to stiffen laws and toughen penalties for sickos who get their jollies being cruel to animals. The Press has been reporting and regularly editorializing about the plight of Buddy, a Labrador Retriever pupper who was tortured with welder’s glue before he a vet humanely put the poor animal out of his misery.

Cruelty to animals is a misdemeanor offense in Mississippi, but it’s a safe bet that any pet owner or animal lover would want anyone who harmed their four-legged friend carted swiftly off to the gallows with no chance of reprieve. According to The Press, state lawmakers are getting the message after being repeatedly reminded of what happened to poor Buddy. Accordingly, readers of the newspaper have flooded its pages with letters in support of the Press’ efforts. A search of the newspaper’s Website for the term “Buddy” returns a near-endless string of stories, editorials an letters from readers. Some are even sending the paper money to help in the crusade.
